When looking for a home, they then ask whether a residence card and an intention to live there allow them to follow only ordinary purchase procedures.

Immigration status and home-acquisition restrictions are distinct legal issues. A residence card is important for identity and lawful stay, but it neither converts a foreign national into a Korean citizen nor creates a blanket exemption from real-estate duties.

U.S. citizens buying in the metropolitan area should check permit requirements and when they can actually move in before entering a purchase agreement.

Where Do Foreign-Buyer Land Transaction Permit Zones Apply?

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport redesignated the foreign-buyer permit zones first established in August 2025 for one year, from August 26, 2026 through August 25, 2027.
